ST. STEPHEN, S.C.–According to the Ninth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, Linda Branton Gregg, 54, was sentenced to six years in prison this week. Once out, she will then serve three years probation.

Authorities said to avoid trial, Gregg decided to plead guilty to the charges.

The St. Stephen woman was accused of stealing $80,000 from her employer, the late Dr. Herbie Orvin of Macedonia.

Orvin once owned a dentistry business in St. Stephen for years until he passed away suddenly at the age of 51-years-old in 2007.

He left behind a wife and three young children at the time.

Dr Tristan Cordray eventually purchased Dr. Orvin’s business in June 2007.

Authorities say Cordray became suspicious of Gregg in January 2011, after opening a letter from Chase cardmember services that was addressed to the practice.

The letter stated that a third-party check had been submitted for payment on a credit card in Gregg’s name.

When Cordray confronted Gregg about the letter, she reportedly abruptly resigned from her job.

According to Deputy Solicitor, Bryan Alfaro, Dr. Orvin’s widow spoke at the sentencing, an additional breach of trust charge was dismissed as part of Gregg’s guilty plea.

Gregg was initially arrested in December 2011 after a long investigation by the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The 54-year-old old was a former office manager for Dr. Orvin’s business. Even after his death, she continued to work for Dr. Cordray.

Her crime came as a surprise for those who knew the late Dr. Herbert Orvin, a man who was very involved in his community, having once served as a member of the Timberland Booster Club and coach for Lowcountry Foxes.
