MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—Berkeley County supervisor, Dan Davis, has confirmed that the county will purchase the old Food Lion building for approximately $350,000. Council voted on the measure earlier this week.

The abandoned building currently sits adjacent to the Berkeley County Government Building along U.S. Highway 52.  In 2005, the county moved its administration offices into the old K-mart building.  A few years later, the grocery store then closed.

“We have a community facilities plan that anticipated that we would one day end up in that building,” said Davis. “We actually own the property that it is on. We just didn’t own the building itself.”

Nekirk Salistown L.P. currently owns the building. Davis said this is the second time that the company approached the county about purchasing the building. He said the county was first approached shortly after Food Lion closed its doors for business. At the time, Davis said the county wasn’t interested.

“We just didn’t really have a need for the building,” said Davis.

However, as the county continues to grow, so does the need to be able to provide more services to the residents who call the area home.

“The community facilities plan addresses some other offices that we would like to move into that building like our purchasing department, voter registration, etc.,” stated Davis. “We have offices already in other locations. What we would be doing is bringing them up here, so that they are all in one location.”

As for when the county will begin giving the old building a new makeover, Davis said that’s still too early to tell.

“We really haven’t gotten into that yet. We’ll start discussing that over the next several months,” said Davis.
