Dr. Mick Zais, State Superintendent of Education, recently announced that five South Carolina schools were nominated to apply for the 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award.
“I am excited to nominate five of our highest performing schools for this prestigious award,” said Dr. Zais. “Students, teachers, and parents of these extraordinary public schools should be proud of this achievement and what it means for their communities. Let’s congratulate them and also recognize the efforts of the local school boards and school district leadership for this national accomplishment,” said Dr. Zais.
The U.S. Department of Education runs the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, honoring public and private K-12 schools that achieve at high levels or make significant progress in closing achievement gaps. South Carolina may nominate up to five schools annually per federal guidelines.
Dr. Zais’ nominees are:
• Hanahan Elementary in Berkeley County School District
• Hanahan Middle in Berkeley County School District
• Royall Elementary in Florence School District 1
• Socastee Elementary in Horry County School District
• West View Elementary in Spartanburg School District 6
All five schools made significant gains in performance during recent years with more than 50 percent of students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, these schools received “A” ratings under South Carolina’s federal report card.
Consistent with the selection criteria, all five schools are in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, meaning their students scored within the top 15 percent of all schools statewide. Also, all subgroups scored in the top 40 percent on state assessments in both English Language Arts and Math.
