GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—On Thursday, Goose Creek city leaders broke ground for the new fire department headquarters station and fire department station III on Button Hall Avenue–that’s right across the railroad tracks from one of the city’s current fire stations located on the same street.

“We are going to employ 12 additional firefighters,” said Mayor Michael Heitzler at the groundbreaking. “It’s hard to build firehouses, but it’s even harder to put enough firefighters in there.”

During the event, Heitzler said city staff managed to accomplish both without raising taxes.

According to Goose Creek city councilman, Jerry Tekac, he was the member that suggested this site.  The city reportedly looked to acquire property for the new building originally.

The Button Hall Avenue location will consist of a 32,000 square foot facility that will house the administrative offices and four-bay-garage substation.

The second fire station will be located near the Lowes in Goose Creek and significantly smaller at just 10,000 square feet.  This building is meant to house a crew of four.

In early February, the city recently awarded the contract to build the new fire stations to China Construction America.  The international company has a South Carolina office based in Columbia.

Construction is expected to start very soon and last about 14 months.

The total price tag to build the two new stations is estimated to be around $13.4 million.
