MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—It was no April Fool’s joke when employees of D’s Jewelers and Heads Up Hair Design walked into their businesses Tuesday and found their AC units apparently not working.
Darrel Trout, who owns D’s Jewelers and the shopping center it sits in, says he walked to the back of his business and got quite the surprise. He noticed someone had stolen two of his three AC units.
“We have two units back here. He cut all three of them. He took two of them and couldn’t get the third one. We don’t know why,” said Trout. “It blows my mind that people
would do this kind of stuff.”
One of the units was taken from behind Heads Up Hair Salon—a business that sits adjacent to the jewelry store.
On Wednesday, crews spent the day replacing the two units, costing Trout approximately $5,500 he says.
“It’s an inconvenience because I’ve had to close earlier than normal today so they can put in a whole new system,” said Rhae Dupree, a hair stylist. “Sonya Gaskins, my co-worker, didn’t even come into work today because of it.”
Luckily, Trout’s surveillance camera did catch the crook on tape. Now he and police are hoping someone might
recognize the person in the image.
“He’s walking around back there like it’s no big deal,” said Trout. “I was pretty shocked. You’ve got Taco Bell right in front of us and there were people coming through the drive thru at that time of night.”
Trout says the units were stolen sometime after midnight on April 1st.
“It’s nothing you’d expect right in the middle of town,” said Dupree. “I hope you (to the thief) didn’t get any money for selling it, and I hope you spend plenty of time in jail.”
