Open letter from Jerry Tekac, Goose Creek mayoral candidate:

It is my understanding that my opponent has questioned and continues to question my commitment to our golf course.

While I find it really comical I wanted to set the record accurately. I’ve been a member of the golf course since 2003, and as this sheet indicates I have spent over $28,000 at the course. I would consider that a pretty good indicator of my commitment.

I did vote against the deed restriction and as I stated Thursday night, I don’t have confidence in my opponent’s commitment to the course.

He has told me privately that he doesn’t get golf and he could envision the property turned into green space and open space. My opponent is now circulating a letter throughout The Hamlets telling our residents that I owe you an explanation.

Here is my explanation. I have been a staunch and vocal supporter of our golf operations before I was on Council, while I have been on Council and will be well after I’m on Council. I’ve demonstrated with my personal money and now with investing in my home.

My challenge to the mayor is this. Show the residents your financial commitment to one of city’s assets. The one good thing his letter does provide is his written acknowledgement that the hospitality tax funds will be used to help the golf course. I appreciate his reversal of not wanting to spend another tax nickel on the course.
