MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many lowcountry merchants are ‘going pink.’ Orvin’s Furniture on Main Street in Moncks Corner is one of them.

“We’ve all have had someone that has fought the good fight and has lost the fight against cancer,” stated James Orvin, the owner.

About 40,000 women in the United States will die in 2014 from breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

While his furniture store is decked out in pink on the outside, Orvin has decided to take the fight against breast cancer to the next level by helping launch the very first pageant of its kind called Crowns for a Cure. Unlike typical beauty pageants, the winners who are crowned will serve as queens for funding cancer research.

“What a great way for young adults to bring awareness to breast cancer and other

cancers to the youth, so that the fight for cancer can start early,” explained Orvin. “Basically, Crowns for a Cure will raise money to be donated to the American Cancer Society.”

On Saturday, Orvin invited the reigning Miss South Carolina Teen, Erica Wilson, to his store for a surprise announcement.

“Orvin’s has selected one of our outstanding teens who has raised money for several charities, who has mentored elementary school students, who is mentoring our exceptional children at Berkeley High School and who we think is a class act and has supported Berkeley County in her reign as Miss Teen South Carolina,” Orvin stated.

When Wilson arrived at the furniture store, Orvin announced she had been chosen to serve as the pageant’s first ‘Miss Lowcountry’ for Crowns for a Cure.

“I’m very honored that they chose me to be the ambassador for this because it’s

something that’s very close to my heart. I’ve had many friends and family who’ve had to fight breast cancer,” Wilson explained. “I’m very glad that the proceeds are going toward breast cancer research.”

As the pageant’s very first queen, Wilson will serve as the ambassador for Lowcounty’r Crown for a Cure.

Orvin says the very first pageant for Crowns for a Cure will take place some time in 2015. The Berkeley Observer will announce the official date at a later time.

The pageant will have contestants from all ages. Queens from Junior up will be expected to serve their community, raise money for cancer and make appearances at various events throughout the community.

“What I love about coming up with this pageant is that we’re spreading an early awareness of cancer among our future, young contestants. What a great way, since cancer seems to be pretty dominant in woman, especially breast cancer, for Erica and others like her to pretty much pass on this awareness to the youth so they can grow with it,” explained Orvin. “Hopefully by the time they’re adults this can be a fight that we can win.”

“We will continue to fight for a cure, until we CELEBRATE a cure” is the Lowcountry’s Crowns for a Cure motto.
