Goose city leaders pass the first property tax increase in decades

property tax hikeGOOSE CREEK, S.C.—During Tuesday night’s city council meeting, Goose Creek leaders passed the first property tax increase in 34 years. The last time voters saw a tax hike was in 1980.

The measure passed in a 5-0 vote last night. Council members Kimo Esarey and John McCants were both absent.

According to Mayor Michael Heitzler, the money generated from the increase will pay for the salaries of twelve new firefighters.

Last month, Councilman Jerry Tekac appeared on The Bryan Crabtree Show where he stated that there was no way to avoid the tax hike.

“Unfortunately, that’s not possible,” stated Tekac on the air. “We’re pretty efficient in how we manage our money, but when you add twelve new firefighters and when you’re going to add a debt payment of about $700,000 to pay for two new fire stations, you have to find the money somewhere.”

Tekac has said that the average homeowner would see a property tax increase of approximately twenty dollars—that’s an increase by five mils. In 2016, the city’s budget also calls for another tax increase of five mils, the councilman stated.

Along with the property tax increase, Goose Creek residents will also see their water bills increase by approximately 14.1 percent. This means, the average bill will go up by $3.51 per month.

Both increases take effect in January.
