BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—On October 13th, the county’s finance committee recommended that council approve the funding of 51 ballistic vests for the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office.

Last night, county council unanimously agreed to spend $43,000 to replace the old vests that have expired.

Most vests have a shelf life of five years before they begin to degrade.

Each Level IIIA vest costs around $777.50 which includes sales tax and shipping.

According to Councilman Tim Callanan, the money to purchase the new vests will come out of the county’s general fund.

In the past the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office was awarded grant funding through the Department of Justice’s Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program.

However, the sheriff’s office was denied funding this year due to a reduction of available money.

As a result, the justice department reportedly limited their awards to smaller jurisdictions in greater need of ballistic vests.
