Three people sent to hospital after recycling plant fire in Berkeley Co.

viva fireBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–An early morning fire at a recycling plant sent three people to the hospital Saturday morning.

According to Moncks Corner Rural Fire Chief Scott Lee, shortly before 7 a.m. about seven different agencies responded to a fire at the Viva SC Recycling plant located at 1620 Cypress Gardens Road in Moncks Corner.

Pimlico Rural was the lead agency responding to the fire but received assistance from Moncks Corner Rural, Whitesville Rural, Goose Creek Rural, the Moncks Corner Fire Department, Goose Creek Fire Department, Moncks Corner Fire Department along with multiple other departments.

Lee stated that employees were at the plant when the fire reportedly started from one of the plant’s conveyor belts.

The fire chief says crews got the fire under control shortly after 9 a.m.

EMS transported three workers to the hospital for smoke inhalation, Lee stated.

Viva SC Recycling collects, processes and recycles used tire and post-industrial rubber waste which is in turn processed into environmentally friendly products that are marketed nationwide.
