Gov. Nikki Haley recently announced that Cheryl M. Stanton will continue serving as the director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) during the second term.

Appointed to the position by the governor in May 2013 and confirmed by the Senate later that month, Director Stanton has focused on improving the health and integrity of the unemployment trust fund and refining the agency’s processes to best serve businesses and job seekers throughout the state.

“Under Director Stanton’s leadership DEW has made tremendous progress, from helping more than 140,000 South Carolinians find work to saving our businesses nearly $5 million in interest by regularly paying down the unemployment trust fund loan,” said Gov. Haley. “Director Stanton is someone who understands the importance of growing our workforce, while protecting the taxpayer’s investment in our state, and I know se is the right person to continue leading the agency during this second term.”

This year, DEW improved methods for detecting, preventing and recovering improper benefit payments. The agency reduced overpayments made by more than 30 percent in 2014 as compared to 2013. For the first time in the agency’s history, it has recovered more in improper payments than it has paid out.

DEW has made significant business process improvements to its claims and appeals processes, enabling South Carolina to meet all federal timeliness and quality performance measures.

In addition, DEW has reduced the time it takes for the agency to issue an appeals decision from 58 days to 19 days, saving the agency $1,750 in improper payments for every case in which the grant of benefits is reversed.

“During the last 18 months, DEW has made extraordinary progress in better serving the businesses and citizens of South Carolina,” said Director Stanton. “I am grateful for the governor’s trust in me to continue leading the agency. Moving forward, our team of dedicated employees will continue to lead the charge on South Carolina’s efforts to ensure it has a customer-driven workforce system that facilitates financial stability and economic prosperity for employers, individuals and communities.”
