BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Beloved Berkeley County School Board Member, Mrs. Wilhelmina Jager Moore, has resigned from the Berkeley County School Board due to medical reasons.

Chairman of the Berkeley County School Board of Education, Dr. Kent Murray shared his sentiments, “Having served 28 years in education, I’ve never witnessed an individual who cares more for children than Mrs. Wilhelmina Moore. Berkeley County School District is forever blessed because of her service.”

Mrs. Wilhelmina Jager Moore is a native of Pineville, South Carolina. She has been a life-long student, a career educator and a community leader. She attended Greenhill Elementary, Redeemer Elementary and J.K. Gourdin Schools in Berkeley County. Mrs. Moore later attended high school at Voorhees High School and Junior College. After marrying and starting a family, Mrs. Moore entered South Carolina State College where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She also holds an Educational Specialist’s Degree in Educational Administration and has completed coursework toward a doctorate in Educational Administration at South Carolina State University.

Mrs. Moore began her career in public education as a teacher at Cainhoy School in Huger, South Carolina. After teaching for several years, she was accepted into the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling. Two years later when Mrs. Moore returned home to Berkeley County, she became a guidance counselor at Central High School. During her ten-year tenure at Central High, Mrs. Moore helped an unprecedented number of students enroll in college. Later, she became a guidance counselor at C.E. Murray High School in Williamsburg County.

Her contributions extend beyond the school building. She continues to be a tireless advocate for the students and citizens of Berkeley County serving as their representative on the Berkeley County School Board. Mrs. Moore has spent more than two decades on the board representing education for all students. She also remains actively involved in her community and church. She is a member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church (formerly Greenhill United Methodist Church) where she attended as a child.

Describing Mrs. Moore as a champion for children, Representative Joseph H. Jefferson, Jr. said, “Mrs. Moore has been a visionary leader and educator in every aspect of her life. She has been a pillar of democracy in this community, county and state. Her work ethic, integrity, values and high expectations have constituted a great legacy to be remembered by all. She will be truly missed within the education arena.”

Mrs. Moore retired from the Williamsburg County School District in February 2015, after most recently serving as a teacher and counselor in the Star Academy Alternative Program. She is also in the dissertation phase of her doctoral degree at South Carolina State University with an anticipated graduation date of Winter 2015.

Mrs. Moore has three adult children: John Sheperd, Dr. Michelle S. Meekins and Kenneth Moore. She has three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Despite her busy schedule, Mrs. Moore enjoys time with her family, including her sister Elizabeth Wigfall and adopted sister, Leola Spencer, and friends.

Among Mrs. Moore’s honors is the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Community Spirit Award presented by the Tri-County Nu Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Berkeley County School District is forever indebted to Mrs. Moore for all of her outstanding contributions to the students and families of Berkeley County. Her love for and dedication to the students is unparalleled and her presence on the board will be sorely missed.
