BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Rescue Squad is kicking off its biggest fundraiser of the year this Saturday, and members are hoping for a big turnout.

Since 1966, the Berkeley Co. Rescue Squad has responded to thousands of emergencies including but not limited to water rescues, land searches and traffic accidents.

Of course, it takes money to keep the squad going so that members can continue assisting the community when needed.

“The rescue squad is an all volunteer organization. We don’t charge a fee for our services,” said Bill Salisbury, who is not only the chief of the squad but also the county coroner.

This year, the squad is hoping to raise approximately $15,000. One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go toward

purchasing new equipment, maintaining current equipment and just overall daily operations of the squad.

Last year’s event attracted hundreds of people for a day of fun on the water and a chance to win awesome raffle prizes. However, watching the catfish weigh in at 3 p.m. is probably the biggest highlight of the day.

“You can buy tickets the day of the tournament,” Salisbury has stated.

The person who catches the biggest catfish will win $1,000. There will be several other large cash prizes as well for the runner ups.

The staging area for the event will be at the Dennis Boat Landing in Moncks Corner–that’s near Gilligan’s Restaurant. The event runs from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
