Berkeley County Coroner: SLED Investigating Inmate Death

ambulanceBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, on August 21, at approx. 1:30 a.m., Dustin James Powell, 28, of Cottageville was found hanging and unresponsive in his cell at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

He was transported by EMS to a local hospital and pronounced dead, Salisbury stated.

The coroner stated that Powell was alone in his cell.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and SLED are investigating the death.

An autopsy will be conducted and more information will follow, Salisbury added.
