HANAHAN, S.C.–On Friday, August 28, 2015, Hanahan High School will honor the memory of Staff Sergeant Girard “Jerry” Gass, Jr. before its home football game against Timberland High School.

Prior to the 7:30 p.m. kick-off of Friday night’s game, Gass’ family and friends will join Hanahan High School students, faculty and staff as they dedicate Wiley Knight Stadium’s new flagpole to the memory of Jerry Gass, Jr. In addition, Gass’ jersey number (50) will be designated as a “number of honor” for the Hawk football program and in the stadium’s monument park.

A 1999 graduate of Hanahan High, Gass died just over a year ago while on patrol with his Green Beret team in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. Gass distinguished himself in service to his country, receiving numerous commendations, awards and medals, including the Bronze Star.

Prior to his enlistment in the United States Army, Gass received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Gardner Webb University where he was an offensive lineman for some of the most successful Bulldog football teams in school history. In high school, Gass was on the offensive line for the Hanahan Hawks and was captain of the wrestling team.
