Heavy Rain Leads to Flooding, Road Closures in Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The heavy downpour isn’t only impacting downtown Charleston. Berkeley County homeowners are also experiencing the impacts from the rain as well.

On Saturday, Berkeley County officials stated that all public libraries have been closed due to the severe rain.

Several homeowners along Highway 17A between Jamestown and Macedonia have reported that their power has flickered on an off throughout the day.

At this time, Berkeley Electric Cooperative is only about 16 outages in the county. (To view outage map, click here.) So far, SCE&G are reporting no power outages in the area. (To view outage map, click here.)

College Park Estates in Ladson.

“Almost every street on a down hill is flooded. Bridge by the middle school is closed. Berkeley County has it blocked off and the bridge on Oxford is open but you have to go slow,” stated Samantha Powell-Eadie. “The water is to the door of the truck.”

Berkeley County deputies have also blocked off Tall Pines Road–another area currently experiencing flooding.  Officers have been on scene making sure drivers slow down in the area.

Drivers are also urged to drive slowly along Highway 52 just before Foxbank Plantation. Heavy rain is blanketing the road, making the highways slippery.

“Part of 52, closer to Moncks Corner, is flooded all the way across. I think they have police out there now,” stated Ashley Moore Baxley.

streets. A number of homeowners have discovered their backyards have also been turned into mini swimming pools.

With the exception of heavy rain, Lamont Lampkin of St. Stephen says he has yet to see any flooding in the area.

Highway 402 in Moncks Corner/Cordesville is also experiencing heavy rain on the roadways.

Neighbors in the Bonneau area says heavy rain is also a major problem in the area. Many homeowners are opting to stay indoors since their yards are flooded with water.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is urging people not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary.

Deputies are currently reporting the following road closures in Berkeley County:

  •  FRENCH SANTEE ROAD /Route S45; Temporary Lane Closures, WATER ON ROAD; PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
  • OXFORD RD/Route S-596; All Lanes Blocked.
    CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING. FLOWING WATER HAS OVERTOPPED BRIDGE.
  • S-946/TRINITY PL.; All Lanes Blocked
  • CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING. CANAL HAS OVERTOPPED BRIDGE.
