BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the National Weather Service, the flash flood warning will remain in effect until 12:15 p.m.

NWS doppler radar indicates that light to moderate rain is expected to continue in the area. Significant flooding is still ongoing in many areas.

Due to the extremely wet soils from the rain over the past three days and the increasing coastal tides, flooding will remain a problem into early afternoon.

With increased flooding and the brunt of the heavy rain happening Sunday, Berkeley County has moved to OPCON 3. This means a disaster or emergency situation is likely or imminent and will lead to full or partial activation of EOC.

Some locations that will continue to experience flooding include Goose Creek, Hanahan, Moncks Corner and Mount Pleasant/Huger.

On Saturday, the Berkeley County Rescue Squad rescued a woman from her home on French Quarter Creek Road in Huger after becoming trapped by water. First responders continued evacuations Sunday as the

water continued to rise.

“Many roadways are flooded over throughout the county. This includes 52, 17-A, Redbank and many others. DO NOT drive until the water goes down,” stated Chief Deputy Mike Cochran with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. “Some roads are missing manhole covers and others are completely covered in water. Stay where you are please.”

Blair Jones, a homeowner in Jamestown, says the water continues to rise in the area, blocking many people inside their homes.

“It’s awful! Heavy rain, flooding, can’t leave the house because of the road being so deep,” he said.

Goose Creek homeowners have reported flooding–at least a foot deep–into their own homes, forcing some to seek shelter elsewhere.

“My sister’s house flooded out in Goose Creek–Willowbrook. Almost a foot of water in the house and rising when we got her out. It’s two feet deep in the street,” stated Lacey Vincen Strunk.

Berkeley County officials strongly recommends Short Stay and Overton residents evacuate their homes. Old Black Oak Road and Monk Lane branch are both expected to washout.

Shelter for Short Stay and Overton residents is established at Berkeley Middle School. Evacuation route: exit area and take 52 to the school.

Due to continued heavy rain, severe flooding, road closures and power losses, the Berkeley County School District has canceled classes and closed offices for tomorrow, Monday, October 5, 2015.
