HANAHAN, S.C.–According to district officials, the Berkeley County School District practiced its responses to a simulated crisis at Hanahan High School on Thursday morning.

District staff and principals coordinated the planning and execution of the crisis simulation with the Hanahan Police Department and Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness Department.

The school district conducts crisis simulations at schools each year to ensure that policies and procedures in place are the most effective, promoting the safety of the students and staff. Hanahan High School conducted an active shooter drill, though the crisis during simulations vary each year.

All precautions were taken to ensure that no students were in danger during the drill, said district spokesperson Katie Orvin.

“I commend the students and staff at Hanahan High School as they immediately responded to the simulated threat on their campus and followed procedures that we have put in place,” said Tim Knight, Berkeley County School District Safety and Security Officer. “We also appreciate the partnership we have with our local law enforcement and emergency service agencies who participated in today’s drill. They do a great job assisting the School District in all of our endeavors to provide the best possible security for our students and staff.”

Law enforcement, first responders and school district staff demonstrated all of the steps that they would take during an actual school emergency.

The crisis simulation resulted in minimal delay to the school day and will have no effect on dismissal.

“These exercises provide great training opportunities that help build and strengthen the relationship and coordination efforts between the School District and emergency responders,” said Ms. Brenda Blackburn, Berkeley County School District Superintendent. “The safety and security of our students is our top priority, and it is our responsibility to be prepared in the event that any crisis may occur on our campuses.”
