Santee Cooper Initiates Spill at Santee Spillway

Santee Spillway File Photo Oct 2015MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Due to current lake levels and forecasted rainfall upstream, Santee Cooper began spilling operations today at the Santee Dam. The controlled spill began at 2,500 cubic feet of water per second into the Santee River.

Spilling, which is a normal part of Santee Cooper’s hydroelectric operations in periods of increased flows into the lakes, is expected to continue until further notice. Information is updated each business day on the lakes information line, 1-800-92LAKES.

The 3,400-foot Santee Spillway is part of 40 miles of dams and dikes around lakes Marion and Moultrie. The Santee Cooper Lakes are part of a 15,000 square-mile watershed that stretches into North Carolina. It’s the second largest watershed east of the Mississippi River.
