Bike-A-Thon Takes Aim at Childhood Cancer

child cancerGOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek Police Chief Harvey Becker is calling on all Goose Creek area residents to join the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s “Making a Difference for St. Jude” Bike-a-thon on Saturday, April 9.

The event, in its 31st year, begins at 9 a.m. at the lake and hiker-biker trail behind Goose Creek City Hall.

Riders are needed to raise funds for the world-famous research center in its battle against childhood cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.

“We’re looking for riders of all ages who will contribute their time and talent to help children live,” Becker said. “We really need lots of riders, since they are the ones who can make this Bike-a-thon successful.”

Riders ask sponsors to make a donation based on each mile completed.  Riders who raise $35 will receive a St. Jude T-shirt.  Those who raise $75 will receive a St. Jude drawstring backpack.  Riders who raise $150 or more receive a St. Jude umbrella.  Prizes are cumulative.

“The real prize, though, is the pride everyone can take in giving children a chance to live a normal life,” Becker said.

Since the hospital opened in 1962 close to 150 children and families from South Carolina have received treatment from St. Jude.  bike a thonCurrently, more than 40 children from South Carolina are receiving treatment from St. Jude.
