GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler has proclaimed May 15-21 “Judo Week in the Creek.”

Mayor Heitzler signed the proclamation on Monday, May 16 at City Hall, where he was joined by several instructors and staff members of the Samurai Judo Association, the largest club in the United States Judo Association.

The club is headquartered at the Naval Weapons Station in Goose Creek, and offers free lessons.

Judo, having originated in Japan in 1882, is becoming increasingly popular as a demanding and inspirational Olympic sport. The unique sport teaches valuable character attributes such as self-discipline, patience, self-confidence, courtesy, humility and physical fitness.

The Samurai Judo Association has helped develop Judo locally by bringing internationally honored Judo teachers and competitors to Goose Creek. For more information on upcoming local events, including a free seminar on July 30, call (843) 553-6702.

In the proclamation, Mayor Heitzler urges “all citizens to join me in recognizing and commending the level of physical and mental health that is achieved and maintained though the art of Judo.”
