SCDOR: 17 Boeing Workers Turn Themselves In On Tax Evasion Charges

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, 17 Boeing employees turned themselves in to SCDOR investigators Monday for the willful attempt to evade or defeat a tax.

Five of those employees are from Berkeley County.

“The individuals submitted fraudulent W-4 forms to their employer claiming to be exempt from South Carolina income taxes and failed to file state income tax returns,” read a SCDOR news release.

With total earnings over $3.78 million, SCDOR officials say the individuals collectively evaded paying over $157,000 in individual income taxes to the state of South Carolina.

If convicted, the defendants face up to $10,000 in fines and/or up to 5 years in prison per charge.

The following defendants were booked into The Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Facility in Charleston County this week:

  • Samuel Boccella, Jr., 47, of Berkeley County evaded $17,312 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Jason Brittain, 35, of Berkeley County evaded $6,888 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Benjamin Campbell, 35, of Dorchester County evaded $7,832 in state income taxes for 2011-2014 (4 charges).
  • Karlos Isom, 40, of Charleston Country evaded $4,577 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Ernest Jones, 33, of Dorchester County evaded $11,164 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Jason Jones, 42, of Berkeley County evaded $10,040 in state income taxes for 2011-2014 (4 charges).
  • Christopher Jordan, 46, of Dorchester County evaded $15,908 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Ramone Lambright, 34, of Orangeburg County evaded $9,707 in state income taxes for 2011, 2013, and 2014 (3 charges).
  • Travis Mazyck, 35, of Dorchester County evaded $8,893 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Joedenna Mitchell, 29, of Charleston County evaded $10,712 in state income taxes for 2011-2014 (4 charges).
  • Joshua Nichols, 37, of Charleston Country evaded $6,401 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Lucius Porter, Jr., 57, of Charleston County evaded $10,652 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Nyentue Seekie, 32, of York County evaded $7,598 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Randall Simpkins, 40, of Dorchester County evaded $4,301 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Michael VanAlstine, 43, of Berkeley County evaded $7,755 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Brandon Waring, 27, of Berkeley County evaded $11,790 in state income taxes for 2012-2014 (3 charges).
  • Jaqua Wright, 32, of Charleston County evaded $5,717 in state income taxes for tax years 2011, 2013, and 2014 (3 charges).

This is not the first time Boeing employees have been charged with tax evasion.

Last month, South Carolina Department of Revenue investigators arrested eleven Boeing workers, including five from Berkeley County,  for the “willful attempt to evade or defeat a tax,” authorities stated.

According to officials, the workers submitted fraudulent W-4 forms to Boeing claiming to be exempt from South Carolina income taxes and failed to file state income tax returns.

With total earnings over $2.2 million, the individuals collectively evaded paying $99,729 in individual income taxes to the state of South Carolina, officials claimed.
