BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County School District (BCSD) has announced its new 1:1 initiative to begin in the fall of 2016. Phase 1 one of the initiative will complete with 23 of 43 schools receiving Chromebook devices for each student/teacher in 3rd-8th grade. Phase 2 will include the implementation of 1:1 in the remaining 3rd-8th grade schools.

“BCSD’s strategic school selection will allow for the largest number of schools possible to achieve 1:1 for students in the shortest amount of time,” said Diane Driggers, BCSD Executive Director of Technology. “These selected schools have already made substantial progress towards 1:1 through investing funds from multiple sources, as well as securing grants.”

The first 23 schools selected for Phase 1 are as follows: Cane Bay Elementary, Cane Bay Middle, Cainhoy Elementary/Middle, Cross Elementary, Cross High School, College Park Elementary, College Park Middle, Devon Forest Elementary, Daniel Island School, Howe Hall AIMS, J.K. Gourdin Elementary, Macedonia Middle School, Marrington Elementary, Marrington Middle, Nexton Elementary, Philip Simmons Elementary, Philip Simmons Middle, Sedgfield Intermediate, Sedgefield Middle, Sangaree Middle, St. Stephen Elementary, St. Stephen Middle and West View Middle.

Phase 2 will include the implementation of 1:1 in the remaining 3rd – 8th grade schools. Phase 3 schools will include ½ of all high school students and Phase 4 will complete the remaining high schools.  Berkeley County School District will achieve this vision of 1:1 for all students upon the completion of these 4 phases.

“This is an exciting time for our students, faculty, communities and district,” said Brenda Blackburn, BCSD Superintendent. “Engaging students in personalized digital learning will support our goal of increasing student achievement. We are preparing our students to compete in our local economy and in the global market by providing all students with opportunities to develop world class career and technical skills.”
The goal of the initiative is to support every student in their educational journey by providing them with a digital device to be used both at school and at home
