BCSD Names New Director Of Communications And Community Engagement

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Dr. Donald Porter has been named the new Director of Communications and Community Engagement for the Berkeley County School District (BCSD) in Moncks Corner.

He replaces the district’s former communications director, Amy Kovach, who a grand jury indicted on multiple charges related to the 2012 ‘Yes 4 Schools’ campaign. She was officially fired from her job in September 2015. Last year, Kovach plead guilty to misuse of public funds and misconduct in office. She was also fined $25,000 and given two years probation.

The Berkeley County School Board approved Porter’s appointment at its Tuesday, September 27, meeting. Dr. Porter will begin his new assignment on Monday, October 31.

“It is an honor to join the Berkeley County School District and its exceptionally talented and committed teachers and staff,” said Dr. Porter. “I very much look forward to getting to know them as well as the many wonderful parents, students, and stakeholders who proudly call Berkeley County home.”

Dr. Porter has worked in public education at both the local and state levels of government since 1997. Prior to beginning his career in education, Dr. Porter was a morning news anchor and government/education reporter for WRDW TV-12 in Augusta, Georgia.

In 1997, Dr. Porter joined the Georgia Department of Education as a Public Information Specialist and then joined the Richmond County School System in 1999 as the Director of Public Information. Dr. Porter has served as the Director of Communications for Bibb County School District in Georgia and, most recently, Buncombe County Schools in North Carolina.

Dr. Porter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Augusta College, a Master of Public Administration degree from Augusta State University, and a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum Studies with a concentration in Multicultural Education from Georgia Southern University.
