GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–One person is dead and another person injured following a shooting Tuesday night in Goose Creek.

Deputies say two people have been charged in connection with the crime.

Berkeley County Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury has identified the murder victim as 20-year-old Nicholas bradley Valentine of Goose Creek. Officials say he was a passenger in a car and found dead on scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Chief Deputy Mike Cochran, shortly after 10:00 p.m., a deputy was on patrol on Pineshadow Drive when he heard multiple gunshots coming from approximately 100 feet away. When this happened, he saw a silver Chevrolet Malibu back out of a space without its lights on and speed off, passing the deputy’s marked cruiser.

The deputy made a traffic stop on the vehicle and the passenger exited the vehicle and was detained. Upon checking the driver, it was discovered that the female driving the vehicle had gunshot wounds as did another passenger. EMS was called to the scene.

The female victim, Catelyn Alcantara, 18, of Goose Creek was transported to an area hospital where she was treated and is expected to recover.

Jonnell Jacob Harris, 21, of Bayshore Blvd in Goose Creek, was the passenger in the Malibu who was detained. He was charged with Discharging a Firearm into a Building.

Christopher Eugene Smith III of Goose Creek has been arrested for murder and weapons violations.

Cochran stated that Smith had been arrested by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office for 3 cases involving weapons violations and two drug violations on November 16, 2016. He was on probation at the time of that arrest for weapons related charges.

Detectives stated that they notified Probation & Parole agents who indicated that he was going to violate his parole. Sometime thereafter, Smith bonded out on a total of $90,000 surety bond.

Sheriff Lewis stated, “Our Narcotics detectives and deputies have made multiple gun and drug related cases in the Pineshadow Drive area and will continue to do so. This situation is a tragic reminder of what happens when safeguards that are part of our criminal justice system fail to work.”
