MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler delivered his State of Berkeley County 2017 address Wednesday.

During the address, which Peagler called his “Berkeley County is Open for Business, and Berkeley County Means Business” address, he highlighted the nearly $1.5 billion in economic development investments and the nearly 5,000 new jobs announced in his first two years in office.

“New opportunities to achieve the American dream, to provide for their families, and to see their children and grandchildren stay here after completing their education because the opportunities to prosper are right here in Berkeley County,” Peagler stated during the address. “No longer does the next generation have to go to the big cities like Atlanta, Charlotte and New York, for that matter, to attain their dream jobs.”

During his address, Peagler also discussed the county’s unemployment rate.  The latest data from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce shows that Berkeley County has experienced its lowest unemployment rate since April 2001.

In the months of November and December, Berkeley County’s unemployment rate was under 4 percent. The last time, Berkeley County had two consecutive months with unemployment rates under 4 percent was in 2002, added the county supervisor.

“We are very proud of the incredible successes we share, but we certainly will not rest on our laurels,” stated Peagler. “We will continue to bring new opportunities, investments and jobs to our area. To continue to see these new opportunities, we will need to continue the mantra of Berkeley County means business.”

Peagler also discussed providing additional funding to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

“While we hope to continue that trend again this year, we know that we will need to invest more this year in our 911 Communications and EMS services,” stated Peager. “Making these investments in our 911 and EMS services will not only ensure much needed improvements today, but it will also help build the proper support needed for future growth.”
