New Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Substation Opens In Cross

A sheriff’s office substation opens in Cross.

CROSS, S.C.- – A lighted marquee sign in rural Berkeley County Thursday flashed the words “Sheriff’s Substation” as a blue and white tent and a podium was set up for a big announcement.

Dozens of community members from the Cross area joined sheriff’s deputies for the grand opening of a new sheriff’s office substation.

Sheriff Duane Lewis addressed the crowd at the event on Thursday evening. There was also ribbon cutting and refreshments for attendees. Deputies say there was a good turnout and that the goal of the substation is to help these citizens by having sheriff’s office services more accessible in this part of the county.

Community members in Cross joined Sheriff Duane Lewis for the opening of the Cross Substation.

“This is a place for the public to come in and file a report or get a copy of a report. The Cross community is rather remote and this will save community members from having to drive so far to get a copy of the report or meet with a deputy,” said Chief Deputy Mike Cochran. “Some folks do not want to meet a deputy at their home.”

Sheriff Lewis addressed the crowd at the grand opening.

The substation is located at 1659 Old Highway 6. It will primarily serve residents of Cross and Pineville. Deputies say this office will not be staffed with full-time deputies, but it will be staffed with trained volunteers. Deputies will use the location for meetings.

Deputies say the Cross Substation includes the amenities of a standard office building. “Eventually we will share the building with EMS once they put a bay in there for an EMS vehicle,” Cochran said.

“It is unique in that citizens did not have any type of way or place to meet a deputy before,” Cochran said. “They are very excited about having it open. The community members have expressed a lot of interest in having it.”

Dozens of community members were interested to hear about the new substation.

The sheriff’s office says that this is the first of several substations that are in the process of opening, in an effort to make services are accessible in other parts of the county as well. Future locations include: Clements Ferry/Huger/Wando, Sangaree, Pimlico/Spring Grove/Strawberry, and Goose Creek area, which is still to be set.
