BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Several deputies saved a man’s life after authorities say he led them on a high-speed chase before flipping his car Friday afternoon.
According to Chief Mike Cochran with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, around 2 p.m. a deputy was patrolling Old Highway 6 near Loch Dhu Lane in Cross when he observed a 1992 Cadillac Sedan DeVille traveling at 67 MPH–12 miles above the posted speed limit.
When the deputy attempted to stop the Cadillac, the driver sped off and refused to stop.
Cochran stated that the deputy followed the vehicle for approximately 7 miles until the vehicle crossed the Rediversion Canal while on Highway 45.
The Cadillac then left the road and the driver lost control near Princess Lane and flipped the car over. Cochran stated that the car landed on its roof and caught fire.
Acting quickly, the deputies on scene got a fire extinguisher and put the fire out. They then broke the windows out and removed the driver.
Deputies say that Robert White, 46, of Cumbie Road in Andrews, S.C. was found to be a habitual traffic offender and was driving under suspension.
White was transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
The SCHP responded and also worked the crash.
