Longtime Berkeley Electric Board Member Passes

MONCKS CORNER — Reverend Joseph Gibbs, Sr., one of the longest serving members on Berkeley Electric Cooperative’s Board of Trustees, passed away at the end of March. He was 74 years old.

Rev. Gibbs served as a Trustee for Berkeley Electric Cooperative since his election in 1979, serving for 38 years. He also served on Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina Board for 19 years; served 3 terms on Cooperative Electric Energy Utility Supply (CEE-US) Board and was a National Rural Electric Association voting delegate for 30 years.

During Berkeley Electric’s 75th Anniversary in 2015, Gibbs shared thoughts about his time at the Cooperative. “Service, service, service. I want to be remembered for the service I gave. Not the longevity but the quality of service that I gave to our members,” he said.

According to Berkeley Electric president & CEO, Dwayne Cartwright, that is exactly the legacy that Gibbs leaves behind. “I am hard pressed to think of another individual who embodied as much of the cooperative spirit as Reverend Gibbs,” said Cartwright. “He always had time to listen to what the members had to say and showed a true commitment to serving them. There is no doubt his presence will be missed,” he said.

In recognition of Rev. Gibbs’ contributions to the Cooperative, and out of respect for his family, the Cooperative’s nine-member Board of Trustees will temporarily leave his Seat vacant. Over the next several weeks, the Board will begin reviewing the process necessary to appoint an interim trustee.

If chosen, the interim trustee will serve until this year’s Annual Meeting of Members when the membership will vote to either keep the appointed candidate or vote in a new trustee nominated by the membership-at-large.
