BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Moncks Corner Rural Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of their own–a longtime firefighter who dedicated much of his life to serving Berkeley County.

Battalion Chief Keith Smith, a 28-year-veteran with the Moncks Corner Rural Volunteer Fire Department, passed away peacefully at Roper Hospital early Saturday morning.

Chief Smith served the Berkeley County Fire Service with distinction, once holding the Vice President position of the Berkeley County Fire Chief’s Association and the Coordinator of the Berkeley County Training Center.

He retired from the Naval Ship Yard and owned his own HVAC business.

Smith was a well-respected leader, mentor, and friend to the First Responders of Berkeley County, and was a loving father, grandfather, and Mason.

Funeral arrangements have not been set.
