MONCKS CORNER, S.C.– A talented student in Moncks Corner, SC could soon have her art on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions to see. Google is announcing the 53 state and territory winners in its tenth annual Doodle 4 Google competition, a contest open to K-12 students across the United States to redesign the Google based on the theme, “what inspires me.“
Olivia Lumsden, a homeschooled 6th grader, is one of the 53 winners with her doodle, “A Gaggle of Google Geese.” “I am inspired by nature and wildlife. In my neighborhood, there is a big lake where there are lots of geese. The lake is one of my favorite places to go, to take pictures, paint, and watch the geese. I love the geese and even named my favorite one Ruffles,” Lumsden said. Lumsden’s doodle was selected from hundreds of thousands received this year.
To help their favorites succeed, people across the country can vote for their favorite doodle from the 53 state and territory winners. Voting is open until May 18, where the public vote will determine the five national finalists (one in each grade group). Google will announce these five national finalists, one being the national winner, the first week of June. This year’s panel of guest judges includes acclaimed actors, Olympians, activists and educators.
The winning student and national finalists will travel to Mountain View, California, to meet and workshop with Google’s team of professional doodlers and see what it takes to launch a Doodle on the Google homepage. The National Winner will take home a $30,000 college scholarship and his or her school or non-profit organization will receive a $50,000 Google for Education grant.
