BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—According to the county’s planning director, Eric Greenway, this Tuesday (March 25) before the county’s regular planning meeting, farmers and others linked to the agricultural industry will be invited to share their concerns on the local farming economy during an informal discussion.
The meeting will take place 5 p.m. inside the county administration building and is expected to last about an hour.
Greenway says the county wants to help area farmers succeed in their profession because it helps the county do so in return.
“The local farming economy provides more locally grown options for food,” stated Greenway. “It also creates an opportunity for tourism in the county. We have a little bit of that already with the West Corn Maze out on Cooper Store Road.”
The planning director stated that the meeting is all part of the county’s work on the 2010 comprehensive plan.
“The opportunity to produce more local food in the county was a goal of that plan, kind of the first step in the process to implement,” said Greenway. “Anything the county can do, whether it be ordinance changes, we want to help.”
