BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–This week a former NASCAR Weekly Series national champion was sentenced to three years behind bars on methamphetamine charges.

Robert Powell, 50, of Goose Creek, competed in NASCAR’s Weekly Series from 1984 to 2002 winning 111 races in 328 starts at Summerville, Florence Motor and Myrtle Beach Speedways.

In 1988 Powell, who comes from a successful racing family, became the youngest driver to win a NASCAR series at just 23-years-old.

In November 2014, Powell was arrested for manufacturing meth. According to Goose Creek Police, officers were called to a home along Annette Drive for possible drug activity.

According to a police report, investigators collected a garbage can by the house, which was set by the curb for pick-up. Investigators informed the Drug Enforcement Agency, which reportedly found many meth-making materials in the can, including empty containers of drain cleaner, batteries and cold medicine. Agents say many syringes were found, including one that tested positive for meth.

WIS-TV reports that Powell has been moved to a Columbia-area prison August 5 and booked into SCDC’s system. Prison staff will evaluate Powell before assigning him to a facility to serve his three year sentence.

Powell’s project release from prison is August 4, 2018. However, his sentenced could be reduced for good behavior.
