MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—Water customers who have the Santee Cooper Regional Water System as their source of water may notice temporary discoloration and a slight earthy smell in mid-January due to planned routine testing following a recent system upgrade. The water will remain safe for all use during the testing period.
The testing could affect customers served by the Summerville Commissioners of Public Works, city of Goose Creek, Moncks Corner Water Works and Berkeley County Water & Sanitation. These water utilities comprise the Lake Moultrie Water Agency, which purchases the treated water from Santee Cooper.
The water-main testing will ensure the integrity of the system. Testing is slated to begin on Jan. 19 and continue through Jan. 21.
The system’s treatment plant on Lake Moultrie near Moncks Corner increased capacity last year from 36-million gallons per day (mgd) to 42 mgd. The system maintains 26 miles of pipeline. Santee Cooper owns and operates the water plant and transmission lines to provide high-quality water to its customers.
In its annual competition, the S.C. Rural Water Association recently named the system as providing the “best-tasting water” in South Carolina for the third time. The system will celebrate its 25th anniversary on May 1.
