U.S. Census: Berkeley County’s Population Continues To Climb

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – For better or worse, Berkeley County’s population continues to increase, according to a recent report by the U.S. Census Bureau.

One municipality, however, is experiencing an even faster growth rate than other Berkeley County towns and cities. In a new report, the U.S. Census Bureau has identified Hanahan as the 39th fastest-growing city in the country.

A decade ago, the city’s population stood at 17,997. In 2019, the city’s population jumped to 26,917 – a 49.7 percent difference.

Statewide, the U.S. Census Bureau ranks Hanahan as the third fastest-growing municipality. Bluffton is the No. 1 fastest-growing town in the state followed by Fort Mill, which ranked No. 2, according to the agency.

Berkeley County Population Trends

Other towns and cities in Berkeley County also continue to experience a population boom.

Goose Creek has experienced a 21.5 percent increase in population over the last decade. In 2010, the city’s population stood at 35,938. Last year, 43,655 people called the area home.

Moncks Corner’s population has increased by 52 percent over the last decade. In 2010, the town had a population of 7,885. Last year, 11,986 people called the town home.

Bonneau was the only municipality in Berkeley County to experience a slight decrease in growth, largely remaining steady. The U.S. Census Bureau reported the town’s population as 487 in 2010. Last year, the agency reported the town’s population as 486, a .21 percent decrease.

Other Population Findings

Overall, large cities in the south with populations of 50,000 or more continue to grow at a faster pace than in any other U.S. region. Since the 2010 Census, the populations of large southern cities increased by an average of 11.8 percent. Southern small towns grew by 6.7 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
