HANAHAN, S.C. – It doesn’t take a major weather event for flooding to become a potential threat for some Hanahan residents – especially for those who live near the Turkey Creek watershed.

“This problem has been going on in our city for decades but has gotten significantly worse over the past several years,” then-Hanahan Administrator Johnny Cribb said in a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2017.

According to the USACE, flooding has impacted roughly 50 homes with damages to both structure and contents over the last three to five years.

Single family residential dwellings in the lower reaches of the watershed and mobile homes and commercial establishments in the upper portion remain a major target for flooding following any significant rain event.

To find a solution, Hanahan officials continue to work with the USACE to analyze potential measures to address flood‐related impacts in the Turkey Creek watershed.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will present findings from its Turkey Creek Flood Risk Management Study.

This study was first presented virtually last year; however, this time the session will take place in person at 1253 Yeamans Hall Rd. in Hanahan at 6 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.

As part of the study, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers offered several structural and non‐structural measures that may be considered to tackle flooding near Turkey Creek. Examples include addressing specific stormwater system deficiencies, tidal gates and property buyouts.

USACE also identified next steps for further study that Hanahan officials may consider to understand flooding challenges near Turkey Creek. Examples include economic analysis, detailed study of the stormwater and drainage system, and hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of conceptual measures proposed.

USACE representatives will be on hand to answer any questions residents might have. The final report is located at this link.
