BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County School Board Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram will retire later this year.

Ingram made the announcement at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

“I want each of you to know that it is a privilege to be the superintendent of Berkeley County schools, and I am committed to working tirelessly over the next several months to ensure a smooth transition and to give the board ample time to conduct a search in addition to identifying a highly-qualified candidate,” Ingram said during the board meeting.

According to Ingram, he first informed Board Chair Sally Wofford in mid-October of his plans to retire no sooner than Aug. 1, 2021. The pair mutually agreed that he’d publicly announce his plans to step down sometime after the holidays.

“I know from experience how time consuming an effective search can be especially during the hardship caused by this pandemic,” Ingram said. “If the next district chief cannot be found in a time frame commensurate with my retirement, I will postpone my departure until the person is chosen.”

Ingram added that he is willing to work with the next superintendent to implement a seamless change of leadership.

Ingram came to Berkeley County as superintendent in 2017. Prior to taking the helm as BCSD’s chief educator, he served as the superintendent of Darlington County Schools.
