Hunters Find Human Remains in Wooded Area Of Pineville

PINEVILLE, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after human remains were located in Pineville on Wednesday. Deputies said they were called to the scene after hunters made the discovery late in the afternoon.

Just after 4:30 p.m., deputies received a call for service in reference to human remains being located in a wooded area near Sandlapper Lane. Law enforcement units on scene confirmed the findings and notified the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office received notification from Berkeley County deputies at just after 5 p.m. and responded and confirmed the deceased. Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell identified the deceased as Jessie Jones, 87, from Pineville. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death.

Jones was reported missing to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office on February 9, 2023. Investigators and deputies utilized many resources to search the area Jones went missing for weeks. Jones was located in a wooded area that was recently under several feet of water. A controlled burn was recently completed around that area that allowed the terrain to change. The area that Jones was located in by hunters was partially cleared out by the controlled burn.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.
