BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Heads up, drivers — a major traffic tweak is about to hit one of Berkeley County’s busiest crossroads as part of phase one of the county’s U.S. 176 Widening Project.
Starting the morning of Monday, April 28, the right turn lane at the intersection of St. James Avenue (U.S. 176) and US-17A will be temporarily shut down, officials announced Sunday.

While county officials didn’t say how long the road will stay closed, construction crews will be hard at work installing storm drainage, curb and gutter, new sidewalks, and more upgrades in the area.
The $53 million road widening project will expand the heavily traveled stretch from US-17A to the Nexton Parkway Extension. Say goodbye to two lanes — when it’s all said and done, drivers will have five lanes, plus a raised median and sidewalks on both sides.

The project, funded by the 2014 One Cent Sales Tax Referendum, has been in the works for years. L. Dean Weaver Company snagged the contract back in 2021, and the whole thing is expected to wrap up by late October 2025.
Until then, if St. James Avenue is part of your daily commute, plan accordingly to avoid delays. County officials urge drivers to also slow down and stay alert when navigating the construction zone.
In short: the road will get better thanks to the U.S. 176 Widening Project, but first, it’s going to get a little worse. In the meantime, stay patient, Berkeley County!
