BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Big things are happening at Fishburne Educational Center — and it’s not just a new look. The Berkeley County School District has officially relaunched the site as the Fishburne Educational Center for Student Support Services, creating a true one-stop shop for students and families in need.
Fishburne will continue to house its well-established adult education and Head Start programs, but now it’s stepping up in a big way to offer even more. The center has expanded its services to include mental health support, military family assistance, food bank resources, social work outreach, and help for multilingual and international families.
District leaders and community members gathered Monday afternoon to celebrate the relaunch during a lively open house hosted by BCSD’s Division of Student Support Services. Visitors enjoyed tours, presentations and even a musical lineup — with the Goose Creek High JROTC presenting the colors, a heartfelt Pledge of Allegiance led by Head Start student Ameer Mitchell, and special musical selections from both Head Start students and Pastor Dexter Mitchell of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Lunch was provided by BCSD’s Child Nutrition Services team.
Dr. Kylon Middleton, Chief Officer of the Division of Student Support Services, emphasized that this is more than just a building refresh — it’s a mission to serve the whole student.
“Within these walls, every wrap-around support necessary for student well-being will be housed under one roof,” Middleton said. “From mental health counselors and behavioral interventionists to academic support teams, this center is a lifeline for our students’ minds, hearts, and spirits.”
A key highlight of the relaunch is the transformation of the media center into the “Welcome Hub” — a brand-new space offering direct support for McKinney-Vento students, military-connected families, Purple Star families, and international students who are new to Berkeley County.
The revamped Fishburne Educational Center also boasts dynamic professional development areas where teachers and community partners can collaborate, share ideas, and continue building a stronger, more supportive district community.
BCSD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Dixon called the relaunch a major step forward for Berkeley County.

“Today is another opportunity to add a layer of support for our students and families,” Dixon said. “Having a centralized location for wrap-around services means we’re using every resource to uplift everyone — from our 3-year-olds to our adult learners.”
The Fishburne Educational Center for Student Support Services isn’t just a makeover — it’s a fresh, vital resource that’s ready to help students and families thrive.
