BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Palmetto Railways has issued a public notice alerting residents and recreational boaters that Phase 2 of the Camp Hall Rail project will reach a key milestone next week, temporarily impacting waterway traffic between Lakes Moultrie and Marion.

On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the construction team will be placing the center span of a new rail bridge across the diversion canal that connects the two lakes. The work was originally scheduled for Tuesday, however, the weather has caused a one-day delay.

To ensure public safety during this heavy lift operation, the waterway will be completely closed to all boating traffic except for emergency vessels. Law enforcement marine patrol units will be stationed on both sides of the canal to enforce the closure.

The bridge construction is part of the Camp Hall Industrial Corridor rail line, an infrastructure project aimed at improving freight movement in the region. According to Palmetto Railways, the closure is a necessary safety measure as crews carry out a critical phase of bridge assembly over a major recreational and navigation route.

A “No Wake” zone will be enforced under the bridge, and boaters will be prohibited from anchoring, stopping, or fishing in the area. Additionally, construction trucks will be active near both sides of the canal, and officials are urging the public to remain alert and cautious.
