BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A new face will soon join the Berkeley County School Board. Jerald “JB” Borden Jr. defeated Jannie McConnell in Tuesday’s special election to fill the District 8 seat.
According to unofficial election results, Borden won the race by 49 votes, with 740 people total casting their ballots at the polls.
Throughout the campaign, Borden’s platform centered on advocating for teachers and students, ensuring adequate resources for schools, and serving as a voice for the citizens.
Following the election results, McConnell congratulated Borden on his win and added that the “voters had spoken.”
“I wish you well and pray that it will always be about the children as you serve District 8, but all districts of Berkeley County,” she posted to her official Facebook page.

“To the 345 voters who voted for me, I say, thank you! Thank you for believing in me and championing me every step of the way. Let’s keep our focus on the main thing, and that’s the children,” she continued. “We must always put God first and do all that we can for every child. May God richly bless each of you. I love you, and the BEST is still yet to come. I’m proud of following God’s directive by running in this special election.”
A special election was necessary after Crystal Wigfall, who previously represented District 8, resigned Feb. 10, 2024.
“I am experiencing some health challenges and after prayerful and thoughtful consideration, I have made the decision to relinquish my seat to prioritize my health and well-being as it is necessary at this time,” Wigfall announced last year.
Tuesday’s election results will be officially certified Friday, May 9 at 10 a.m. Borden is a 2012 graduate of Berkeley High School in Moncks Corner.
