MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – The Great Clips salon in Moncks Corner is once again joining the fight against a rare and aggressive cancer as part of the 9th annual “Help Great Clips Cut out Sarcoma Cancers” fundraiser, benefiting MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.

Now through June 13, customers at the Moncks Corner location at 469 N Highway 52 can donate any amount to support sarcoma cancer research. As a thank-you, donors will receive a $3 coupon toward their next haircut. All proceeds will go to funding sarcoma research and clinical trials at the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops in the body’s connective tissues, including muscles, fat, nerves, blood vessels, bones, and cartilage. It is considered rare, accounting for less than 1% of all adult cancers, but it can be aggressive and difficult to detect early. There are more than 70 subtypes of sarcoma, and its ability to occur almost anywhere in the body makes it challenging to diagnose and treat.

The fundraiser was started by local Great Clips franchisee Karen Allen in memory of her husband, Roger Allen, who was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma in 2011. That was the year, they received the news that Roger had a spindle cell sarcoma and a 10-pound tumor the size of a basketball in his abdomen and pelvic area.

The MUSC Hollings Cancer Center’s medical team worked with Roger to determine the best plan for his case. He earned the nickname “Miracle Man” as he not only made it through the surgery but went on to make an incredible recovery.

In 2013 the tumor returned and throughout the next 3 years, Roger underwent multiple surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy and trials before passing in 2015.

“I know firsthand the quality of care that MUSC Hollings Cancer Center provides South Carolinians who are diagnosed with cancer,” said Allen. “My husband left behind a great legacy and annually we get to honor his memory with the help of our community by continuing the fight against Sarcoma Cancers with this fundraiser. Please join us in honoring a remarkable man and furthering local sarcoma research and clinical trials by visiting a Charleston area Great Clips salon to donate—every dollar makes an impact and helps save lives!”

Since its inception, the campaign has raised over $60,000 and continues to grow each year. Great Clips is also a title sponsor of MUSC’s annual Swing for a Cure Golf Tournament, which supports cancer research initiatives.

Residents in Berkeley County can support the cause locally by visiting the Moncks Corner Great Clips at 469 N. Highway 52 and making a donation during their next visit.
