BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A Memorial Day traffic crackdown in Berkeley County led to over 200 citations and three DUI arrests but no fatal crashes, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

From May 23 to May 25, the sheriff’s office traffic unit conducted a targeted enforcement operation across high-traffic areas to promote road safety during one of the year’s busiest travel weekends.

Deputies issued 211 citations, with speeding (66), driving without a license (33), and seatbelt violations (37) among the most common. Fifteen drivers were cited for driving under suspension, while others faced charges for expired tags, open containers, and uninsured or unregistered vehicles.

Authorities also issued 143 warnings for various traffic violations.

In addition to traffic citations, deputies made five criminal cases, including one fugitive arrest and drug-related charges such as possession with intent to distribute MDMA and marijuana. Three DUI arrests were also reported.

Seven vehicles were towed during the weekend operation.

Despite the volume of enforcement activity, the sheriff’s office reported zero fatal crashes in its jurisdiction—marking a successful effort to keep roads safe during the holiday period.
