HANAHAN, S.C. – It was a wild night in Hanahan when police officers found themselves in an unexpected role: reptile wranglers.
Recently, Officer Daniel came across a wandering alligator—nicknamed “Irwin”—out for a stroll in a residential area. The gator was reportedly not following crosswalk etiquette, prompting a swift and careful response from the Hanahan Police Department.

Pfc. Gamra and Officer Thompson joined Officer Daniel to safely corral and relocate the reptilian visitor without incident.

The team shared a lighthearted post on social media with the caption, “Crikey! Police Officer or Reptile Wrangler?” and joked that “Steve would be proud,” in reference to legendary wildlife expert Steve Irwin.
The alligator appeared unharmed and was returned to a safer, more appropriate habitat. Officers also snapped a few photos with the unexpected guest—what they called the ultimate “gator selfie.”
