BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office issued more than 120 citations and made five arrests for driving under the influence during a Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement operation.
The four-day initiative, which ran from Friday through Monday, targeted impaired and reckless drivers and aimed to improve roadway safety during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, officials said Tuesday.
Deputies issued 123 traffic citations and 50 warnings. Speeding topped the list with 55 citations, followed by 15 seatbelt violations and 10 citations for driving under suspension. Other offenses included driving without insurance, expired tags, careless and reckless driving, texting while driving, and open container violations.

Five drivers were arrested on DUI charges. Deputies also investigated five criminal cases that resulted in arrests, including possession of a stolen firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and three cases involving habitual traffic offenders. Eleven vehicles were towed for various traffic-related offenses.
“Our priority is always to keep the roads of Berkeley County safe,” Sheriff Duane Lewis said in a statement. “Holiday weekends bring more traffic and an increase in dangerous driving behaviors. I’m proud of the work our deputies did over the holiday weekend, and I want to remind the public that traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
The sheriff’s office said it will continue targeted enforcement operations throughout the year to reduce crashes and promote roadway safety.
