MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Human remains discovered last year in Berkeley County have now been identified as a Moncks Corner man who had been missing for more than five years, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The remains were found on June 19, 2025, near Stoney Landing Road, with authorities notified around 5:12 p.m. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, assisted by the Moncks Corner Police Department and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene and recovered the skeletal remains.

Through DNA analysis, officials positively identified the remains as Charles Litchfield, who was 47 years old when he went missing in January 2020 in the Moncks Corner area.

Despite the identification, officials say the circumstances surrounding Litchfield’s death remain unclear. The coroner’s office has ruled both the cause and manner of death as undetermined.
