BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Drivers traveling along SC-27 near Interstate 26 in Berkeley County should expect changes beginning next week as crews shift traffic into a new roadway alignment, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
SCDOT officials say traffic-shifting operations will begin March 9, moving vehicles from the current roadway configuration onto a new alignment that includes two traffic circles on both sides of the I-26 interchange.

Once the shift is complete, all traffic traveling through the intersection will be required to navigate the new roundabouts, marking a significant change in how drivers move through the area.
The change will also impact eastbound and westbound on-ramps and off-ramps at Exit 187 on Interstate 26, as traffic patterns adjust to the redesigned intersection.

Flagging operations planned
Transportation officials say crews will conduct the traffic shift using flagging operations between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., when workers will direct drivers through the area as lanes and travel paths are adjusted.
Motorists traveling through the corridor may experience temporary delays while crews manage traffic and guide vehicles into the new alignment.

Drivers urged to use caution
SCDOT is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert while traveling through the work zone.
Officials say motorists should pay close attention to posted signs, traffic control devices, and roadway crews as the new traffic pattern takes effect.
The shift is part of ongoing roadway improvements aimed at improving traffic flow and safety near the busy interstate interchange.
