MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – A major investment aimed at expanding services for vulnerable children in Berkeley County is underway, as a local telecommunications company pledges significant funding to support a growing child advocacy center.

Home Telecom has committed $200,000 over the next two years to help fund the $2 million expansion of the Kay Phillips Child Advocacy Center’s Berkeley County location in Moncks Corner. The company recently presented the first installment of $100,000, marking the start of its contribution to the project.

The expansion comes as demand for services continues to rise. Since opening its Berkeley County facility in October 2024, the center has seen a steady increase in the number of children and families seeking support, driven in part by the county’s rapid population growth.

Currently operating out of a 4,300-square-foot building, the center is set to undergo a 6,000-square-foot expansion. Leaders say the additional space will allow the organization to better meet the community’s needs while maintaining the level of care it is known for.

“We are honored that Home Telecom has chosen to provide such generous support for the expansion of our Child Advocacy Center in Moncks Corner,” said CEO Kay Phillips. “Critical projects like this are only made possible through strong community partnerships, and we are so grateful for Home Telecom’s investment in our essential services to the children and families of Berkeley County for years to come.”

The expansion will add clinical, therapy, training and meeting space, while also allowing the center to increase staffing and expand prevention programs into local schools and communities. Officials say it will also improve safety, privacy and emotional support for children, while reducing delays in forensic interviews and medical examinations caused by limited space.

Home Telecom leaders say the donation reflects the company’s commitment to supporting families in the communities it serves.

“We are proud to be a part of this important step forward for the Kay Phillips Child Advocacy Center,” said Home Telecom CEO William Helmly. “It is paramount to our community that we all help to foster healthy, successful children.”

Phallan Helmly Robbins, vice president of Growth and Experience at Home Telecom, added that the project represents more than just a building expansion.

“Supporting the expansion of the Berkeley location for KPCAC is not just an investment in a building; it’s an investment in the safety, healing, and future of our county’s children,” she said. “When local businesses and non-profits work hand-in-hand, we strengthen the entire community.”

As a nationally accredited children’s advocacy center, KPCAC provides child-focused, evidence-based services designed to support children who have experienced abuse while minimizing additional trauma during investigations. Services are offered at no cost to families, ensuring access to care regardless of financial circumstances.

Officials say the expansion will help the center continue its mission of providing hope, healing and support to children across Berkeley County for years to come.
