BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – The American Red Cross is assisting a Berkeley County family after a house fire damaged their home on Patriot Lane in Summerville on Sunday morning.

Disaster-trained Red Cross volunteers responded to the scene and are helping six people affected by the fire, providing financial assistance for immediate needs such as food, clothing and temporary shelter. The organization is also connecting the family with additional community resources as they begin to recover.

Officials have not released details about the cause of the fire or whether any injuries were reported.

The response comes as the American Red Cross of South Carolina marks its annual Red Cross Month, a nationwide observance that dates back to 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first proclamation recognizing the organization’s humanitarian work.

“When help can’t wait during emergencies, people in South Carolina rally together to provide relief and hope for neighbors in need,” said Susan Everitt, CEO of the Red Cross of South Carolina. “This humanitarian spirit is at the heart of our community, and we are proud to honor all those who make our mission possible during this year’s Red Cross Month celebration.”

Everitt encouraged residents to get involved by donating, volunteering, giving blood or taking a lifesaving skills course.

The Red Cross routinely responds to home fires — the most common disaster in the United States — providing emergency support to families in the hours immediately following a crisis.
